Sugar Cookie Recipe with Carrot & Tomato Shapes

Get ready to add a fun twist to your baking with our sugar cookie recipe inspired by Rose Balimba’s tableware. We decided to color some of the dough and shape it into charming carrots and tomatoes before baking. Here’s how to create these delightful cookies! Check out our video here.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Food coloring (orange, green, red)
  • Carrot and tomato cookie cutters

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough

    • In a medium bowl, whisk together flour and baking powder.
    • In a large bowl, beat the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
    • Add the egg and vanilla extract, mixing until combined.
    • Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture until a dough forms.
  2. Color the Dough

    • Divide the dough into three portions.
    • Add orange food coloring to one portion for carrots, red to another for tomatoes, and green to the remaining dough for the leaves.
  3. Chill the Dough

    • Wrap each portion in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
  4. Shape the Cookies

    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
    • Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to about 1/4 inch thickness.
    • For the carrot leaves, use the green dough and attach them to the top of each carrot cookies.
    • Use cookie cutters to cut out shapes.
  5. Bake the Cookies

    • Place the shaped cookies on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
    • Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden.
    • Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Decorating Ideas

To further bring out the carrot and tomato designs, consider using royal icing to add details. You can pipe on carrot ridges or tomato seeds for an extra touch of realism.
